Week 4: God Comforts

Jeff Griffin

Psalm 23:4

Our journey through the great 23rd Psalm brings us to the classic verse about traveling through “the darkest valley.” In the study of this verse, we discovered the priceless promise of God’s presence in hardship. God’s presence is the key to surviving life’s greatest challenges.

Kicking it off:

Fall is in the air! Are you a fan of autumn? What is one of your favorite aspects of this season?

Discussion:

1. Reread Psalm 23:4: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

The word “through” is a significant aspect of this verse. What encouragement do you see in that word?

 2. Share with the group about a “dark valley” season in your life.

 3. The four-word phrase: “you are with me” has the potential to enable us to endure any hardship. Have you ever experienced God’s presence when in a difficult season? If so, tell the group about it.

 4. How can God’s “rod and staff” bring us “comfort” when in hard times?

 5. David claims to “fear no evil.” Is it possible to grow to the point of fearlessness? If so, how do you get there?

 6. How might you use this verse to encourage a friend who has been given a cancer diagnosis?

 Wrapping It Up:

Spend some time in prayer, asking God to enable you to experience His companionship when passing through the dark valleys in life.
